Sotheby’s Auction House
Concluded the sale of the controversial art work, a banana duct taped to a wall, by Maurizio Cattelan, for a whopping $6.2 million, which is four times more than the estimated sale price.
The auction house claims that Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun won the bid for the “Comedian” installation of the Italian visual artist at Sotheby’s on Wednesday after he outbid six other challengers.
“In the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience,” Mr Sun was quoted as saying.
According to the New York Times, the taped banana-intertwined perhaps as one of the most expensive fruits-ever sold-was previously bought earlier that day for $0.35.
“Comedian” was first shown to the public in 2019, quickly going viral and sparking much controversy over what art is.
The installation comes with instructions on how to replace the banana whenever it rots, as it has traveled the world.
In fact, the fruit has been eaten not once but twice.
A South Korean art student managed to get a hold of it in 2023 when the installation debuted at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
Local media reported that the museum had replaced the new banana in the same place.
Four years earlier, a performance artist pulled the banana from the wall after the artwork was sold for $120,000 at Art Basel in Miami.
The banana was quickly replaced and no one was further involved.
Justin Sun is in charge of the Tron’s blockchain network, which actually enables many cryptocurrency transactions. Last year, the Securities and Exchange Commission in the U.S. accused him of fraud as the regulator claimed that trading volumes of his crypto token, called TRX, were falsely inflated. Mr. Sun denies all charges.
