Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the ‘King of Qawwali’, one of the few legendary names in Pakistani music history. He had an incredible voice and a remarkable talent that gave him the title of ‘King of Qawwali’, for which, Sufi music is deeply rooted: devotional and spiritual forms in which it has ties to Qawwali from traditional to very contemporary. But how did he achieve such great fame, with mark as one of the most prominent vocalists in history?
What is Qawwali?
Indian subcontinent saw the birth of Qawwali, which is associated with Sufi devotional music and characterized by performances featuring vocals largely complemented by accompanying musical instruments such as tabla, harmonium, and dholak. The meaning of lyrics in qawwali is oriented toward spirituality, love toward, and yearning for the Divine, since their purpose is to uplift the listener in spirit and bring him or her closer to a state of spiritual ecstasy.
Traditionally, Qawwali is performed in Sufi shrines and during congregational activities, which is a grant that brings about spiritual reflection towards the unification process with God. His Journey to Becoming the King of Qawwali
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13th, 1948 in Faisalabad, Pakistan, into a family that had been qawwals for ages. His father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, along with his uncles, made names for themselves as top Qawwali musicians, thereby being instrumental in introducing the young Nusrat to the art. But fame did not come easily; sheer talent and dedication to the craft played a huge role in his claim to fame.
Publicly on stage as a Qawwali singer, he saw himself in a breakthrough in the 1970s. Influenced by classical music mostly, he was distinct as improvisation was the other aspect of him that made him different from any other performer. Introduced a novel concept of Qawaaliyat: fused traditional spiritual themes with contemporary instruments and modern arrangements, creating a genre modernized without losing its authenticity.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan had a fame that was more than Pakistan—a worldwide phenomenon as audiences around the planet swooned over his powerful, emotive voice. His vocal versatility which spanned several octaves together with his capacity to produce intricate vocalizations and musical sound effects beat any other musician hands down.
The breakout of Nusrat in international music scene commenced in the 1980s and 1990s, when he collaborated with famous international artists including Peter Gabriel, Eddie Vedder and Michael Brook. His collaboration was instrumental in taking him beyond the reach of conventional Qawwali listening audience.

Almost every album attempted to bring into the kegera of contemporary music traditional Qawwali, which has shifted the focus and thrust of the genre to an audience that has completely changed.
Awards and Recognition
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has received many awards during his lifetime, including the UNESCO Music Prize in 1995. He was also given a Grammy posthumously in 1997 for his lifetime contribution to world music. Nurtured by both eastern and western music circles, it integrated traditional and modern music and was formed in many instances.
